OREANDA-NEWS  By building networks of intelligence bases on the Kuril Islands, Russia is sending a signal to Japan about the consequences of helping Ukraine. This was announced by James Brown, professor of the Faculty of International Relations at the Tokyo campus of Temple University, his words are reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper.

"Moscow intends to show Japan that steps aimed at supporting Kiev have costs, and they are not in Tokyo's interests," he said. It is noted that the equipment installed in the Kuril Islands will allow tracking the military activity of Japan and the US military stationed at Japanese bases.

Earlier, the Japanese government called the southern part of the Kuril Islands "illegally occupied" by Russia. The Japanese Foreign Ministry declared its commitment to solving the problem with this part of the Kuril Islands and concluding a peace treaty with Moscow. The ministry pointed to the priority of resuming humanitarian exchanges with this territory and visits by former Japanese residents.
